Happy Monday fashionistas I hope your week is getting off to a fabulous start! October will be here in 24 hours and with it comes fall, Halloween, and everything pumpkin, but that is not the only things that have me excited. If you are like me and the millions of other viewers and Twitter followers then you know that this month is the season 3 premiere of Scandal. Seems like it’s been a lifetime since the shocking season 2 finale, I’ve suffered major withdrawals and have been feeding my addiction watching seasons 1&2 for the past few weeks. So I am beyond excited for this month to start.
Fans who are familiar with the show are also familiar with the fashions of Olivia Pope, played by the brilliantly talented Kerry Washington. Ms. Pope is almost never seen wearing a skirt or dress, except in flashback episodes or when she’s attending a black tie affair, and with good reason. With such a high profile job, her style is more business chic than fashionista, but the multitasking maven always pulls off whatever she’s wearing. From her power suits to her signature strut, there’s no denying Miss Pope is in a class all her own, which is why it’s so easy to create a style inspiration in her honor. Don’t worry gladiators it’s handled!
If its one thing Olivia Pope loves it’s her power suits, coming in at a close second is a neutral color palette. The White House communications director turned crisis management specialist gravitates to beige, gray, white, black, and a few pastels. Lyn Paolo, the costume designer for the hit TV show, has a brilliant way of showing off Ms. Pope’s professionalism but never losing sight of the fact that she’s a woman.
The deconstructed power suit. For this inspired look, I took the key essentials that Olivia never leaves the house without. She is always seen wearing a gold Movado wrist watch, there is even one named in her honor. Along with the lux timepiece, a cell phone never leaves her hands, and she is usually seen toting a Prada or Goyard bag. I decided on a coral diagonally ruffled blazer, gray trousers, and black patent pumps. Throw some curls in your hair, a signature strut and you’ll be sure to turn heads.
For her frequent jaunts to the White House, Ms. Pope always makes sure to arrive in style. She is often seen with a sleek pair of gloves and a cashmere pastel colored coat, which ironically, was a hot commodity on the runways in February. Pastel colored coats are huge this fall, a major difference from the darker colors of years prior.
High Fashion Power. For this look, I went with trousers, once again, because anything less wouldn’t be Olivia. A belted peplum top, wool coat, brown suede Manolo Blahnik pumps, a Saint Laurent Paris carryall, brown leather gloves, and pearl earrings finish out this high power look.
Olivia loves her wine. Her other pastimes include relaxing in her chic apartment, while wearing stylishly warm sweaters.
Never one to miss a party, Ms. Pope stuns at any black tie event that she attends.
Enchanted Affair. I would love to see Olivia turn heads in any of these dresses, but because of the bold colors of the 3 gowns, that will probably never happen. Inspired by the black tie events she frequents, I think these 3 gowns would look amazing. My favorite is the Lanvin bow embellished satin gown featured on the right. The three stunners are perfect for any affair, giving a real reason to arrive fashionably late.
Well, there you have it, 4 style inspirations that will hopefully be of help to you this season. I hope that was enough to tie you over until Thursday. I don’t know what I’m more excited about the show or the fashions. Here’s hoping that both will be great!
Do you like Olivia Pope’s style? Is it a MESS or a YES?
