I very rarely talk about myself on my blog. I mean sure you know I love fashion and style, but what else do you know about me? Recently, I read an article on the Independent Fashion Bloggers website, about revealing yourself through your blog and what borders between “personal” and “private”. While, I will never fully put my entire life on display, I will however share a few things from time to time. After a year of blogging, I feel the timing is right to share certain parts of who I am with all of you, one of them being my goal of becoming a fashion stylist. By sharing my experiences, the ups and downs, the research, and motivation it takes to achieving what I want, it opens the door for conversation amongst us all, as we are all pursuing a dream.
Last Thursday, October 3, I had the opportunity of attending the first ever fashion conference in Detroit. Fashion Speak 2013 was a one day educational experience featuring six experts in six different fields of fashion. Each fashion professional conducted a 50 minute workshop leaving the floor open to questions afterwards. The experts all came from a diverse professional background, ranging from, fashion design, social media, wardrobe styling, business building, branding and public relations. Professionals included business building expert April Boyle, branding expert Mark Zapico, Hollywood wardrobe stylist Chelsea von Mach, social media aficionado Michael Melfi, fashion public relations maven Aferdita Rakipi and fashion designer and Project Runway alum Daniel Vosovic.
I’ll be honest, the only reason why I attended this event was for wardrobe stylist, Chelsea von Mach, I really didn’t feel like there was a need for me to stay for anyone else. I’m so glad I was wrong! This experience is one that I will hold onto for a very long time. I learned so much in just seven hours and my passion for the fashion industry grew even more. Watching Chelsea describe her career and how she made it only fueled my drive, plus the fact that she is from Michigan, proves that I can do it too. Fashion designer and Michigan native, Daniel Vosovic is a true testament of hard work paying off. He gives people a reason to care about his designs; he’s constantly putting his everything in his work, and never wavers in what he believes in. That was the advice he gave the attendees and that is the advice I will carry with me throughout my journey.
The journey to my dream began on October 3, the day I was a part of Fashion Speak 2013. I am forever changed because of this event and cannot wait to use all the advice that was given. Thank you to all the experts, sponsors, Detroit Garment Group Guild and Taubman.
